About Shovel Point
The rhyolite cliffs above Lake Superior are widely considered the best climbing in the state. Top roping can feel much more intense than the most similar climbing near the cities at Interstate State Park with routes ranging from 40 to 80 feet.
Getting to Shovel Head + Permits
Navigate to the Tettegouche Visitor Center to fill out a climbing permit and purchase a vehicle permit if needed.
Then head over to the Shovel Point Trail Head (where we’ll be meeting at 9:30 on8/27) and hike northeast for an easy half mile following the signs for Shovel Point
Gear you’ll need and other items to pack
If you don’t have any of the gear listed below…
Please reach out! A huge part of our mission is to make climbing accessible, especially when it comes to sharing gear.
If you’re able, consider renting gear from the University of Minnesota, REI, or another local business.
Essential gear you'll need to climb:
Climbing shoes (strongly suggest renting if not owned - fit is important!)
A helmet (biking helmets work if you don't have a climbing-specific helmet)
A harness (easier to adjust for different body sizes)
A chalk bag + chalk
Essential non-climbing gear:
2L of water (a 2L soda bottle is a great cheap option if you don't have a big one)
Food for lunch/snacks (we won't have a cooler, so keep shelf stability in mind)
Sunscreen/bugspray
Sunglasses
Hand sanitizer
Sweat towel/bandana
Hiking shoes or other sturdy shoe for the approach
Sandals or crocs for when you’re not wearing your shoes.
Carpool
The carpool will be arranged with registered climbers.
A final note
This is a very popular climbing area. We will be moving wherever we can to find open routes and won't leave ropes on the wall any longer than we have to. Do your best to get there at 9:30 am if you want to have an easy time finding us and climb all the routes we set up. Otherwise please inform us if you plan on arriving late so we can try to keep our phones on.
Help make climbing more accessible
If you have climbed with us in the past, plan to do so in the future, or just like what we're trying to do, please consider donating $5 or more to help maintain our gear and make climbing more accessible, thanks!
