About He Mni Can
This bluff rises 350 ft above ground level and is home to over 150 sport routes sitting in an old quarry site. This site can feel sandbagged (harder than described) due to the rock being polished from hands and shoes on the wall. Generally the harder the climb, starting at about 5.10 or so, the less polished it will be.
Getting there
Navigate to the Barn Bluff Trailhead and park for free in the lot a little further down the road. Then head up the stairs Switching back left and up before arriving at the base of the cliff.
Gear
No gear is required and everyone will have a chance to climb no matter their gear, however:
Shoes are highly recommended to get full enjoyment from the trip. If you do not own shoes we suggest renting from the University of Minnesota or REI.
Helmets will be required at all times near the base of the climb, including when typing in as Redwing is known for rockfall. If you do not own a helmet we will have two for people to use, but they get sweaty so please bring a bandana to use on the inside of the helmet if you desire. Helmets can also be rented from the University of Minnesota or REI.
Harnesses are required for climbing and are in short supply. We have two for people to use but if you have your own or can borrow one from a friend this is recommended.
What to bring
Pack for a day hike, and bring all your climbing stuff (chalk, shoes, harness, helmet, quickdraws, rope, etc.). Bring a large water bottle and lunch. We suggest bringing at least 2L for a single person, a refilled 2L soda bottle could work well for this. Other recommendations include Sunglasses that you can get dirty, a sweat towel/bandana, hand sanitizer, insect repellant, sunscreen, extra snacks, and sandals to lounge in.
Carpool
If you plan on participating in the car pool we will meet at 8am, as it is a 60 minute drive. The carpool meets at the Metro Transit Park and Ride at 1559 Eustis in St Paul. (approx Hwy 280 and Como Ave). There may be alternate locations available.
A Final Note
This is a very popular and large climbing area. We will be moving wherever we can to find open routes and won't leave ropes on the wall any longer than we have to. Do your best to get there at 9:20am if you want to have an easy time finding us and climb all the routes we set up. Otherwise please inform us if you plan on arriving late so we can try to keep our phones on.
